Turns out TV was a somewhat popular technology, and a dozen channels weren't enough to satisfy requirement. The powers that be at the time couldn't possibly have foreseen the emergence of Snooki, the Kardashians and other "must-see" TV diet -- and if they had, they might have had good reason to impose Draconian measures to keep a cork on the TV technology flask. But it was a simpler, slightly more innocent era. For good or ill, they expanded the TV menu. In 1952 the Federal Communications Commission allocated 70 more channels above the VHF ensemble, this time in the ultra high
frequency or UHF
band delivering channels 14 through 83. You needed a elevate surpass
antenna – preferably an outdoor rig – to capture UHF signals.
