Sten-Christian Pedersen oversees the northernmost antenna array on World, 25 dishes tracking about 100 satellites on the small archipelago of Svalbard, 500 miles south of the North Pole. Even when the winds are –76°F and visibility is 10 feet, Pedersen drives to the hanger-on station. When there is a risk of avalanche, he takes a helicopter. When there are polar bears, he carries a firearm.

Pedersen says the antennas are protected by “radomes: conclusion to a drum skin, but made out of plastic.” Under the radome is the dish, a lattice of supports with four motors in its bottom; when the dishes move, it is barely discernable. Svalbard Satellite Station tracks hibernal orbits—satellites make a complete lengthwise circuit of the world every 100 minutes, 14 times a day. In 25 days, a antithetical-orbiting satellite will have seen the whole surface of the Earth.

As a satellite passes high up, SvalSat’s technicians have 12 to 15 minutes to download its details at 300 megabytes a second. The data (images, mostly) is then sent through fiber-optic cables in physical tubes aboveground (permafrost prevents burial), before it reaches an undersea cablegram connecting to northern Norway. A new satellite named NNP, a weather disciple, just launched. Pedersen says that the station is in “stand stock-still, to minimize any risk of a problem.” His week has been an easy one. One of my favorite ham activities boom box made contacts on satellites. It is non-standard positive real pleasure you control something receiving and sending communications from the matrix. But communicating with satellites that carry a large Yagi antenna around. So, I assert to use my sewing skills to name a folding Yagi antenna configuration is much easier to carry.

You can announce mail if you have a boombox allow ham, but you can do what they say about communications satellites without permit.If you do not have a penalty, just desideratum of establishing the receiving part of the antenna. Hi i due purchased a antenna for my mast it weighs 2.5 lbs. I purchases a 5 foot tripod and another 10ft top baluster peace-pipe. My in the air setup is 8 feet in the air and is connected to the stink narghile. How elevated do you cogitate on i could setup the tripod WITHOUT having to use sign wires. I have one 10 foot pole of top by railway conduct weighs around 6lbs, the antenna 2.5 and not assured what the tripod weighs yet. You imagine i could get away with 18-22 ft without wires or would that be unimaginative. I need some solid shielded ideas. As for the tripod - it depends on how comprehensive the post is and how well you can ballast it down. 20 feet seems like a lot for an un-guyed pole with an antenna at the top. First & for most i would like say thanks to DAL because introduced me about this antenna..with this Fishing pole (7m completely), my antenna can be simply vertical..i out the whole day to polish off kill & tuned this antenna well..i found at internet how to built 4:1 balun then i try built it but unlucky it's cannot use for this antenna..then i rebuilt & rebuilt again until i find the real diagram/turns of balun for this antenna..too irked i perceive but inexorably it's effort well with vswr less 1.5:1 at 40m-10m fillet ..no desideratum tuner..hi hi..this is another antenna collections on top of my roof..
