Who knew 41 years ago that when Rex Fowler and Neal Schulman bumped into each other at the Sword in the Stone Coffeehouse, “in the foothills of Signal Hill,” they would still be strumming guitars together almost half a century later? Not even the Veil, that’s not who.
“It was a cozy little place that had open mikes on Monday,” Fowler recalled. “So we were coming there to get heard and convention our playing. We were the last two guys to go on, (most) of the musicians signed up and left right after the show. We were the last two guys besides the proprietress. Neal played music for me and I complimented him. We talked afterward and a week later we had our first gig.”
They adopted the name Aztec Two-In harmony from a Laurence Ferlinghetti poem. It was 1971 and psychedelic rock was fracturing and fading away. The Byrds had released “Boyfriend of the Rodeo” and folk rock was about to crest. The Eagles, Poco, Seals and Crofts, America, Loggins and Messina, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and a zillion others washed over the airwaves.
