“Exigency is the mother of invention” is a centuries-old saying that automakers are proving to be as accurate today as when the phrase was coined.

The necessity behind much of the innovation that is now occurring in the auto energy comes from regulations demanding a dramatic reduction in new-vehicle stimulus consumption between now and 2016, and even more onerous reductions between then and 2025.

Among the many innovations adopted to hands meet those standards is regenerative braking — a technology first acquainted with in hybrid-electric cars but now expanding into more conventional vehicles.

The concept is forthright: with regenerative braking, some of the energy expended to slow a vehicle is cast-off to generate electricity, rather than wasted by generating heat, which is what happens with a standard braking system.

In a hybrid, the motor that drives the wheels becomes a generator when it is turned in the vis- direction, which is what happens when the vehicle is slowing down. In those circumstances, the wheels are driving the motor/generator.
